About Styrorecyle

At Styro Recycle It, we help Alberta companies reduce their environmental impact and carbon footprint while minimizing the strain on local landfills. We proudly contribute to the growing circular economy in Alberta.

We collect and densify EPS (Expanded Polystyrene), making it recyclable for use in manufacturing beads and other products.

Our machine is capable of densifying most clean foams (free of tape, staples, or other contaminants). While white foam is preferred, we also accept construction foam. Unfortunately, we cannot process any foam used for food packaging due to potential biocontamination, though we are working on a solution for the future.

Facts about Styrofoam Recycling in Canada

  • Why Recycle?

As our cities and population grow, it's crucial to manage our use of natural resources and maximize the value we extract from each one. Recycling strengthens the circular economy, reducing the waste that enters our environment, creating jobs, lowering costs (in many cases), and conserving energy. It’s a solution for both today and the future.

  • EPS Recycling Availability:

Styrofoam is recyclable in many parts of Canada, though not all recycling facilities accept it due to its lightweight, bulky nature and the cost of transport. Specialized facilities collect, clean, and densify EPS to make it suitable for recycling.
  • Environmental Impact:

EPS is non-biodegradable and takes hundreds of years to decompose in landfills. Recycling Styrofoam helps reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills and mitigates its environmental impact.Recycling 1 kg of EPS can save up to 2 liters of oil, as EPS is derived from petroleum.
  • Recycling Process:

EPS is 98% air and 2% plastic, which makes it lightweight but difficult to transport. To recycle it, EPS is cleaned, shredded, and then densified using a specialized machine, which compacts it into smaller, more manageable blocks.
  • Circular Economy in Canada:

EPS recycling is part of Canada’s effort to create a circular economy, where waste materials are turned into new products instead of ending up in landfills.Initiatives and regulations around plastic and polystyrene waste are becoming stricter, encouraging businesses to recycle and find alternatives to single-use plastics.
  • Challenges of EPS Recycling:

Not all types of Styrofoam can be recycled. For instance, food-contaminated Styrofoam, like takeout containers, usually cannot be accepted due to contamination risks. The cost of recycling Styrofoam is higher than that of some other materials due to its lightweight nature, but densification technology is helping to address this issue.
  • Recycling Innovations:

Innovative technologies are being developed to deal with EPS waste, including solutions for food-contaminated EPS. These advancements aim to make it easier to recycle more types of Styrofoam in the future.
